The process

Unlike traditional talk therapy, which relies on thought and cognitive processes and is largely ineffective for resolving trauma, somatic processing recognizes that trauma is stored in the body and uses it to process and clear what’s trapped.

In somatic processing, you tune into your body sensations, movements, and physical experiences to access and process your trauma. You can release stored trauma and tension by bringing attention to these bodily sensations and allowing them to be fully experienced and expressed.

Somatic processing provides a non-verbal and non-threatening way to access and process traumatic memories. It allows you to bypass the cognitive defenses that may arise when talking about difficult experiences and instead tap into the body's wisdom and capacity for healing.
